Editor's Corner
Students and staff celebrated National Youth Service Day, April 21st. They helped in cleaning three state parks. Fifty students and staff spent the weekend at Fort Flagler State Park on the Olympic Peninsula. They helped get the park ready for the thousands who camp and visit the historical site each year. Our student volunteers have spent more than 4000 hours helping clean up the state parks since the big January storms.
The students also helped clean up the storm damage at the Camp Fire Camp on Samish Island by contributing 600 hours of work.
Another project that they had a major role in was helping the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group plant trees and shrubs along stream banks, which helps the areas to become good spawning habitat again.
In a letter from Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group they say: "Thank you so much for sending out your wonderful Job Corps members to volunteer at our planting parties. We planted about 1600 native trees and shrubs this spring in large part due to Job Corps, where they made up the bulk of our volunteers. Once again, thank you, and we look forward to many more seasons." Maya (SFEG)
